Develops quality provisions, specifications, systems, validation requirements, and procedures to monitor design assurance activities. Researches/reviews technical design development activities, test, and supporting documentation for mechanical, digital & analog integration of systems and subsystems. Develops cost estimates and contributes to the Product Assurance sections of technical and cost proposals. Determines and prepares tasks for Product Assurance to meet contract and business requirements. Assesses subcontractor designs and tests capabilities. Performs failure analysis and product validation activities. Acts as a liaison between Product Assurance, Design Engineering, Software Development, Systems Engineering, Management and the customer to ensure design processes are continuously monitored and improved. Monitors design activities from concepts through production implementation. Reviews and approves engineering designs, technical data, and drawings. Ensures technical outcomes are consistent with established engineering principles and practices and that customer and company technical, system, performance, and quality requirements are met.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Applies advanced knowledge of engineering and scientific principles and practices in area of specialized expertise to develop innovative solutions to complex technical problems.
Provides technical leadership, consultation, or guidance to specialized engineering groups and other technical personnel.
Conceptualizes, creates, and analyzes designs to ensure engineering projects meet technical, cost, quality, and performance requirements.
Researches, writes, and presents technical presentations to enhance the company's reputation with customers and in the technical community.
Initiates and maintains external contacts with key experts and officials of other companies, national labs, academic institutions, and government agencies.
Performs technical analysis, testing, calculations, and evaluation of results to solve complex engineering problems, using specialized equipment, or by creating computer programs, models, or simulations.
Prepares, presents, and defends project technical results and recommendations to customers. Participates in formal technical reviews.
Prepares technical and cost portions of proposals related to area of expertise.
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of relevant engineering discipline(s), industry practices, trends, and applications. Advises senior management on new developments and programs.
May direct the work of less senior technical personnel.
Maintains a safe work environment and ensures compliance with safety objectives and policies.
Shares responsibility of self-development with immediate supervisor.
B.S. degree in a relevant technical discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and experience plus 8 years relevant experience; or a M.S. degree and 6 years experience; or a Ph.D. and 2 years experience.
Good knowledge of products and advanced knowledge of functional or technical area; advanced knowledge of engineering principles and practices in area of expertise.
In depth skill using current computer applications and technologies in applicable engineering disciplines.
Ability to identify, define, interpret, and resolve engineering problems involving conflicting design/contractual/policy or technical requirements across functional areas and with difficult coordination requirements.
Ability to prepare technical reports, papers, and presentations and deliver them in written and oral form to customers, industry leaders, and senior management.
Certain positions may require a specific technical degree or prefer a M.S. or Ph.D. degree.
Preferences
Engineering experience with relevant applications in a defense environment.
Specialized technical knowledge of relevant military and commercial design standards.
Master Black Belt Six Sigma Certification or equivalent.
Design for Six Sigma experience
